Nel 1968 sette giovani ragazzi, soprannominati i Chicago Seven, furono processati per aver protestato contro la guerra In Vietnam.
Le Proteste
Il 1968 è stato un anno che ha portato profondi cambiamenti in tutto il mondo, in cui grandi movimenti di massa si unirono per formare dei gruppi di protesta contro le autorità.
L’epicentro di queste dimostrazioni fu negli Stati Uniti, dove sempre più cittadini manifestarono il loro malcontento per la politica del presidente Lyndon B. Johnson.
Il motivo principale dello scontento era la guerra in Vietnam, che si trascinava da quasi dieci anni, con risultati inconcludenti.
Le proteste si erano fatte ancora più infuocate dopo l’offensiva del Tet, avvenuta all’inizio dell’anno.
In occasione del Capodanno lunare (Tet) le forze nordvietnamite lanciarono un imponente attacco agli avamposti Statunitensi.
Colti di sorpresa, gli Americani reagirono in ritardo, subendo numerose perdite.
Questa ennesima carneficina di giovani soldati fece diminuire il poco supporto rimasto in patria alle attività militari nel Vietnam.
È in questo contesto di tensione che sette giovani attivisti subirono un processo ingiusto per aver manifestato il loro dissenso a questa guerra.
I Chicago Seven
Nell’agosto del 1968 la città di Chicago ospitò la Convention nazionale del partito democratico.
Immediatamente i numerosi gruppi di protesta annunciarono una manifestazione di massa nel centro cittadino.
Le autorità di Chicago dichiararono immediatamente illegale ogni tipo di manifestazione e proibirono ai manifestanti di avvicinarsi alla sede del congresso.
Questo non impedì ad alcune migliaia di manifestanti di tentare di forzare il blocco della polizia.
La polizia reagì usando manganelli e gas lacrimogeno per disperdere la folla, che a sua volta rispose con un lancio di pietre e bottiglie.
Alla fine della giornata furono arrestati centinaia di manifestanti e altrettanti furono feriti.
Il Processo
L’accusa si concentrò su otto attivisti, considerati i leader della protesta. Vennero processati nel marzo dell’anno successivo con l’accusa di aver fomentato una rivolta.
La tensione salì immediatamente quando Bobby Seale, unico afroamericano del gruppo, coprì di insulti il giudice Julius Hoffman, che ordinò di legarlo e imbavagliarlo.
Seale, membro dei Black Panthers, rimase irritato dal comportamento razzista del giudice e chiese di essere processato separatamente.
La corte acconsentì e in una successiva udienza fu condannato a quattro anni di carcere per oltraggio alla corte.
Da quel momento iniziò ufficialmente il processo agli imputati rimasti, sette giovani ragazzi che passarono alla storia come i “Chicago Seven”
I loro nomi erano Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines e Lee Weiner.
Il processo che dovevano affrontare era estremamente complicato: l’amministrazione del neopresidente Nixon decise che i Chicago Seven dovevano essere processati secondo l’Anti Riot Act.
Si trattava di una clausola del celebre Civil Rights Act, che puniva severamente le proteste non autorizzate.
Sentenza e Assoluzione
Durante il processo si intuì subito che il giudice Hoffman era chiaramente schierato contro gli imputati: si rivolse a loro con disprezzo e negò tutte le mozioni della difesa.
I Chicago Seven affrontarono il processo in maniera diversa: Hayden cercò di rimanere impassibile mentre Rubin e Hoffman continuarono a provocare il giudice e la corte in ogni modo possibile.
Il processo appariva talmente sbilanciato che molti intellettuali americani si unirono per formare un comitato che informasse la popolazione delle gravi ingiustizie al processo ai Chicago Seven.
Nonostante i loro sforzi il verdetto era ormai scontato.
Cinque dei sette imputati furono condannati per aver incitato una rivolta, con i soli Froines e Weiner a essere giudicati non colpevoli
Inoltre, Hoffman condannò tutti i membri dei Chicago Seven e tutto il loro team legale a cinque anni di prigione per oltraggio alla corte.
Dovettero passare tre anni prima che la difesa poté presentare un appello, che fu accettato per via del comportamento del giudice Hoffman.
La corte stabilì che Hoffman aveva avuto “un comportamento di disprezzo e spesso chiaramente schierato contro la difesa”.
Fu anche rilevante che Hoffman aveva più volte espresso il suo disprezzo per gli imputati e aveva fatto mettere sotto controllo i telefoni della difesa senza autorizzazione.
La vicenda è rimasta fortemente impressa nella cultura americana, specialmente nel movimento hyppie, che grazie al processo divenne sempre più popolare tra i giovani.
Si tratta di una storia ancora molto attuale, in quanto il regista Aaron Sorkin ha deciso di raccontare questa storia nel suo ultimo film “Il processo ai Chicago 7”, da poco pubblicato su Netflix.
