Richard Jewell è una guardia di sicurezza che ha vissuto, in prima persona, l’incubo americano di un innocente.

Richard Jewell è un addetto alla sicurezza col sogno di lavorare nelle forze armate americane, si caratterizza per un fortissimo senso di giustizia, una cieca fiducia nel sistema giudiziario e una buona dose di ingenuità.

La Vicenda

Ci troviamo nella città di Atlanta (USA) nel 1996 quando la cittadina americana fu scelta come sede della ventiseiesima edizione dei Giochi Olimpici.

Richard Jewell lavorava presso il Centennial Olympic Park come guardia di sicurezza durante i vari concerti ed eventi che si svolgevano la sera con migliaia di persone presenti.

La sera del 27 luglio 1996, mentre lavorava, Richard Jewell si accorse della presenza di uno zaino abbandonato vicino alla torre radio situata in mezzo al Centennial Olympic Park.

Sospettando subito che contenesse una bomba pronta a esplodere, Richard avvisò la polizia e aiutò a evacuare l’area prima che la bomba esplodesse.

Quella sera la bomba esplode, il bollettino finale segna 2 morti e più di 100 feriti. Ma parleremmo probabilmente di una strage se Richard Jewell non si fosse accorto dello zaino incustodito e non avesse preso l’iniziativa.

Richard viene descritto dai media come un eroe: è il cittadino che ha trovato lo zaino sospetto con l’ordigno, ha dato l’allarme e ha salvato la vita a migliaia di persone.

Il momento di gloria però dura un attimo; due giorni dopo è lui a essere indagato, diventando il capro espiatorio ideale per appagare la fame di giustizia di un sistema fallace (e maligno).

Richard Jewell diventa un uomo additato per un crimine compiuto da un altro a causa delle circostanze e, soprattutto, dall’ottusità del sistema procedurale in cerca di una soluzione semplice e immediata.

Richard è rispettoso di tutti, lavora sodo e ha slanci di generosità facilmente etichettabili come fuori luogo. È obeso, le sue aspirazioni lavorative sono costantemente frustrate, vive con la madre. Lui vuole solo sentirsi utile, accettato.

Ma per l’FBI invece le caselle sono quelle dell’attentatore solitario, del falso eroe. Così è deciso: Richard Jewell è il colpevole dell’attentato al Centennial Olympic Park.

Richard Jewell da eroe popolare esaltato dalla stampa diventò da un giorno all’altro un mostro, subendo una gogna mediatica senza mai abbandonare le prime pagine dei giornali a causa di una indagine che l’FBI stava facendo sul suo conto.

Venne totalmente scagionato solo nel 2003 quando fu trovato il vero colpevole: Eric Rudolph, responsabile anche di altri attentati di altre città americane.

Purtroppo Richard Jewell morirà, a soli 44 anni a causa del diabete, il 29 agosto 2007.

Il Film Ispirato Alla Storia

La storia di Richard Jewell ha ispirato il regista Clint Eastwood dando origine al film del 2019 con Kathy Bates e Paul Walter Hauser.

In questo film, Eastwood punta il dito contro l’inattendibilità dei media mettendo in evidenza i sottili e tremendi confini che separano l’innocenza dalla colpevolezza, la gogna pubblica dall’esaltazione delle masse, la verità dei fatti dalla verità processuale.

Egli non tratta della costruzione del “mostro”, bensì dell’improvviso ribaltamento di fronte, per cui basta la notizia di un’indagine a proprio carico per passare, in una notte, da eroe a nemico pubblico.

Il regista sembra mettere in scena una parabola morale: al centro c’è la fragilità del singolo contro le architetture del potere statale e dei media.
